WEDNESDAY OF THE TWENTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 30, 2023

Reading 1

As you know, we treated each one of you as a father treats his children,

exhorting and encouraging you and insisting

that you walk in a manner worthy of the God

who calls you into his Kingdom and glory.

REFLECTION

We need someone to guide our soul on its journey to God. We receive the Word of God not as word of men but as it truly is...the Word of God. Men are delivering the message but it is the Holy Spirit at work.

The Pharisees were not able to guide the Chosen People effectively because they left themselves open to darkness and the burdensome laws laid on them did not lead them to God.

We are so fortunate to have someone to guide us along in our interior life. How many have a spiritual advisor or how many of us seek a spiritual person who knows the way well, someone we can open our hearts to and not be embarrassed, and who can teach and counsel us in the things that relate to God?

We should not seek someone who agrees or sides with our problems nor should we seek someone who gives human counsel. Priests are good spiritual directors as are trained lay or religious people. They know God's way.

Always seek someone who encourages in the way of God, knows the Catholic faith and can advise and rouse our souls to have zeal for our salvation. It is so difficult to be our own spiritual advisor--like a patient who is also their own doctor or a defendant being his own lawyer. Our lack of objectivity, our self love and lazy nature can bog us down and discourage us and, therefore, we just give up. Our pride and rationalization of our actions convince us we can do it all alone.

PAPA offers yearly conferences and retreats. Spiritual direction and confession are always there for our choosing. Listen to God's voice, trust your director, pray for your director who also prays for you. Pray daily the PAPA prayer for Priests for our priests to be good shepherds.

God Bless You
