A reading of the holy Gospel according to Lk 4:38-44
After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon.Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her.He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her.She got up immediately and waited on them.At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him.He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.”But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speakbecause they knew that he was the Christ. At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns alsoI must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God,because for this purpose I have been sent.”And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
REFLECTION:
“You are the Son of God.”
Jesus was thrown out of Nazareth.
He was now in Capernaum. After praying in the synagogue He went to Peter’s house. Peter interceded for his mother- in-law. After healing her He enjoyed the companionship of His apostles and shared a meal together.
Jesus came to tell us the Truth, to enlighten us of the Kingdom of God. He became man for this and knew on a human basis how illness can impede our life. We are in need of both physical and spiritual healing.
Would Jesus have healed Simon’s mother- in- law if He had not been asked? Would He have healed the many who came had they not come to Him?
Let us not take for granted the power of our prayerful intercession for others: most especially for the sick and for those who do not yet know about the love of Jesus.
We are very weak — mind, soul and body. Try speaking to someone about God, His Divine Son and salvation, when they are not feeling well, in severe pain, weak, fatigued, dyspneic, or their minds are possessed with evil thoughts, hallucinations and addictions. Not a very receptive environment.
But nothing is impossible with God if it be His will.
Jesus wants to set us free today from our burdens. Jesus never tires of hearing and answering our pleas.
Intercede for your loved ones, people you hear about in the news, fallen soldiers, fallen souls and fallen priests.
Jesus never turned away a penitent, those who were brought in by friends nor will He turn away from you.
