Gospel
Lk 2:33-35
Jesus' father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
"Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
and you yourself a sword will pierce
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
REFLECTION
Today is the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. In the Gospel for the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14, 2023) Our Lord said: “And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”
On this feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows, we celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary’s patience in bearing her cross. Mary was especially sorrowful at the death of Jesus. If a mother is ever obliged to witness the death of a child, she obtains for him all possible relief: she arranges the bed so his posture may be more easy, and thus the poor mother relieves her own sorrows.
Yet when Mary heard Him say: “I thirst,” she was not even permitted to give her Son a little water to quench His great thirst. Nevertheless, in all of her sufferings, she offered everything to God the Father, and with great love she prayed for the conversion of sinners.
Let us imitate her by patiently bearing our crosses.
