Gospel

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Reflection Something Greater is Here

Think about the most awe inspiring moment you may have experienced. Maybe the experience of seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time or maybe being a part of of a crowd of people in a stadium and all of a sudden the whole stadium erupts with cheers after a great play. That feeling when you see how small you are in a big picture. Its breath taking! That is a glimpse of greatness with the perspective of awe.

Now multiply that, because when we are talking about Jesus, well, he created the whole earth, and He knows every person in every crowd, even before they were born. Yet, in this Gospel reading, Jesus refers to himself as the "Son of Man" instead of just saying, He is God's Son. Did you know that the phrase "the Son of Man" is mentioned over 80 times in the New Testament. This is significant. Jesus must have wanted us to know something about this title. Why does He refer to himself as the Son of Man? Could it be that He really wants us to know that He is truly human. I think maybe it is easier for people today to see Jesus as truly divine and the truly human part gets dismissed. God, humbled Himself to become man to save us. Jesus, the Son of Man, is the sign and He is far greater... will you let Him into your heart?
