A Gospel according to Jn 16:23b-28

Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. “I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

REFLECTION

“On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.”

I asked my family to let me know what part of this Gospel really stands out to them also. I asked them individually, not together. My Husband said that Jesus is preparing the disciples for when he leaves. He is preparing them for the day when they will be the ones teaching and spreading the good news of the Gospel.

My daughter, Allison, said that the verse, “On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God” is important. Allison said that it is almost as if Jesus has a tone of passion that he really wants the disciples to get it this time.

My daughter Alaina said that the verse, “The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father”. She asked, when was He telling the disciples this, because it sounds like he is running out of time. We looked it up and Jesus is talking to them before he goes to the Father. He is still teaching them even hours before he leaves.

This is really neat to see how closely aligned my family is with eachother. They are all somewhat on the same track.

How beautiful for Jesus to say, "On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God." To me this means that Jesus is allowing the disciples to ask the Father directly. This is because they know Jesus and love Him. "If you know me then you also know the Father".

We are all called to evangelize and speak the Good News of the Gospel to all around us. We are also called to keep learning who Jesus is so we can know also, the Father. Please consider joining PAPA in our FACE ZBS (Zoom Bible Study). Each week we learn so much as we journey through the Bible with Jesus in the Scriptures. Email us at PAPA@PAPAMio.org for more information.

May God bless you!
