A Gospel according to Mk 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples,

“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket

or under a bed,

and not to be placed on a lampstand?

For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;

nothing is secret except to come to light.

Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.”

He also told them, “Take care what you hear.

The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,

and still more will be given to you.

To the one who has, more will be given;

from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

REFLECTION

"The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you."

It is very easy to go through life demanding justice.

A huge injustice I've been witnessing in the last few weeks is the increase of homeless day laborers in the city. These people are not your usual homeless people that have been in the street for years. Now we are witnessing migrant workers that lost their jobs in near and faraway fields. We have also seen displaced factory or other blue collar workers.

They have recently been kicked from their apartments, and now dwell in the city streets, sleep in the side of buildings and seek warmth around our parishes.

I have not yet encountered a displaced migrant or worker with a bad attitude. Most of them are still hoping: Hoping for work, for a roof over their heads, for stability for their families.

Maybe we could carry $10 fast food cards around, or extra protein snacks and bottled water to give away. We could also acknowledge them as human beings when we see them sitting at the stairs of a building, or by the street light.

We cannot fix the whole world, but maybe if we are kind to those who now are at the absolute bottom of society we can bring the smile of Jesus to them.

God bless y'all!
