OPTIONAL MEMORIAL ST HENRY, SATURDAY OF THE FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 13, 2024

Gospel

Mt 10:24-33

Jesus said to his Apostles:

“No disciple is above his teacher,

no slave above his master.

It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher,

for the slave that he become like his master.

If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul,

how much more those of his household!

“Therefore do not be afraid of them.

Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,

nor secret that will not be known.

What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light;

what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;

rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy

both soul and body in Gehenna.

Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin?

Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.

Even all the hairs of your head are counted.

So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Everyone who acknowledges me before others

I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.

But whoever denies me before others,

I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

REFLECTION

Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my Heavenly Father.

St Henry was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1014-1024. His marriage was childless. He ran an empire, had many servants. In my nit picky mind, I compare my life with his and wonder if I had his life, it would be a slam dunk when it comes to my spiritual life. But is that really true?

The Lord gave me the yearning for marriage, lots of children, and a willing heart to help others. Only God can create in us the desires to fulfill His will—earthly and divine. It is up to me to ask, listen, sacrifice and do what He places in my heart to do, because as St Therese, the Little Flower said, “Everything is Grace”. Our goal is heaven and eternal life with Him, whether we are kings or queens, privileged or not, average Joe or Jane.

We live in this ever changing world, and it is our duty to work on accepting His will, yielding good fruits from either received or lacked talents. It is what we do with talents that we can put to good use, or when we lack in certain talents, how we can still serve Him. We come to know God through faith and He promises to acknowledge us before His Heavenly Father as He did for Saint Henry.

Isn't God wonderful!!

God bless you.
