A reading of the holy Gospel according to Luke 1:39-45
Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
REFLECTION: “For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”
A baby in the mother’s womb hears primarily the voice of the mother. They hear voices around 18 weeks. They respond to voices and noise around week 25. The head actually turns in response to voices. They remember voices and music.
In today’s reading of the Song of Songs the Beloved is filled with joy upon hearing the voice of the Lover. The days awaiting our Lover are soon coming!!
The baby, John the Baptist, leapt for joy when he recognized the Messiah. “For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.”
The meeting by Mary and Elizabeth is brought together by the Son of the Most High. The joy they share is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Let us invite the Holy Spirit into our lives. May the Holy Spirit unite our souls with God.
God Bless You
